Creating Tutorials

In this article, you will find guidance around creating tutorials for Gravity Sketch.  To learn more about recording video in VR, please visit the In-app filming guidance article.

Purpose of tutorials

There are two main types of tutorial:

  • Workflow Tutorial illustrating a section or entire workflow (a series of features)
  • Feature Tutorial illustrating how to use one individual feature

Tutorials should both inform users of the existence of a workflow or feature as well as educate them on how to do it.

Assets

Continuity:

  • For individual tutorials or a series of related tutorials (e.g. a product release) agree one asset to use throughout the series
  • Decide on the colorway of this asset across the series
  • Ensure assets used are publicly available in the community asset library

Script

Evergreen use:

  • In the voiceover, do not reference the point in time or release the feature is related to.

Avoid saying anything timely e.g…

  • this July’
  • version 6.3’
  • ‘2024’
  • ‘New feature’
  • ‘Just released’

This context can be set in the copy surrounding the video, or an additional promo. The tutorial should be approached as if it is a standard feature that can be used indefinitely.

Terminology:

Script structure:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Tell the viewer which feature you are going to show them
  • Explain why it is important in the wider context of a workflow (see positioning alignment below)
  • Take them step by step through the buttons and actions to use the feature(s)
  • Briefly pause between features to enable a good view of how the asset / room has been modified
  • Mention where users can find the asset you have used
  • Reiterate what was shown and the value

Duration

Workflow tutorial segments: 4 minutes - 10 minutes

Individual feature tutorial: 90 seconds - 4 minutes
